Commercial Growouts
Corn growouts are a large part of our business and we offer a fair amount of flexibility in Puerto Rico and also in Illinois. This type of quality check is usually performed on seed lots or grades to check fertility, self percentages in hybrids or outcross quantities and appearance in both hybrid and inbred lots. Much of the material that we receive for growouts is to complete brokerage contract requirements. The remainder of the growouts is either to complete certification in Illinois or is informational for customers. Growouts may be read by IL Crop personnel at the customer’s option.

Our plots are planted on raised beds and drip irrigated. The most common sample size is 200-240 seeds, planted in 4 rows of 50-60 seeds each. We recommend the higher rate for inbred lines. We will plant any number of rows that you may require, as long as they are submitted in pairs. Each pair (1 rep) is randomized in the plot unless other arrangements are made to plant all seed side by side. Envelopes (required size: 2 1/2” x 4 1/4”) will be supplied upon request and all samples are to be customer packaged and submitted to our Champaign, Illinois, office for arrangement in planting order. In most years, we have 2 planting periods: early, which is mid-October and a later period which runs from the first week in November to early December. Seed is set up for planting in the order that we receive it. We also offer a growout program in Illinois during the summer for winter production.

Certification Growouts
If you have participated in the AOSCA or OECD corn certification programs in Illinois or have had certification completed (tags issued) in Illinois on seed lots grown out of state, you must submit required growouts to complete certification. A list of required lots will be sent to you before the growout season. If you have questions concerning certification and growouts, please contact Hannah Hudson, Operations Manager, at 217.359.4053. All growout samples for certification will be read by IL Crop.

Corn Nursery for Field, Sweet, Pop & Specialty
(top of page)

We have put together the following data to give you suggestions for your nursery plantings this coming season. We will work with you to conform to any special requests you may have, however, it would be very helpful to make things uniform.

Our corn nursery program is based on planting in a 15’ row, which is actually 12’ planted with a 3’ alley way. Seed is planted at the approximate rate of 18 kernels per row and is customer packaged in envelopes (2 1/2” x 4 1/4”) that will be supplied by IL Crop upon request. Customers are welcome to use their own envelopes, but all nursery envelopes must be this size! All corn nurseries are planted on raised beds with drip irrigation.

Packing your assembled nursery and the required detailed working instructions should be done with great care to avoid damaged packets or confusion for the setup people. For example, we have seen many ways to pack nurseries; some of them unsuccessful. Some acceptable methods include running string or wire through holes in the envelopes to keep them in order; be sure that the holes are not too big whereas seed can work out. Another good method would be to ship in long shipping boxes designed for small packets and either string or tape the top edges of the envelopes to keep them in order. Still another acceptable method would be to layer the envelopes flat in a box, separating each layer with newspaper, etc. Be sure, however, to start at the bottom of the box with the highest row numbers and end with the lowest numbers at the top of the box so one doesn’t have to empty the box first to find row #1. Always include instructions, preferably on your letterhead, so we will know how to set up as well as whom to contact and how. In addition, include with your billing instructions information such as departments, programs, purchase orders or names of people responsible. Please refer to the shipping section for more information.

Any delayed rows should be packaged separately and marked as delays. In their place in the regular nursery rows, please put soybean or dry bean seed in envelopes for the respective delay rows. The actual delay rows will be hand planted at the customer specified interval. Please indicate in your instructions the kind of seed you are using in your delay blanks. Do not set up your nursery to fit in a particular size area without prior authorization from IL Crop! Please contact Hannah Hudson, Operations Manager, at 217.359.4053, if you have questions.

All of our acreage is drip irrigated and includes the following in the basic per row price: (There is a minimum charge of 100 rows.)

Planting envelopes (required size: 2 1/2” x 4 1/4”), if requested.
Land, labor and management for planting.

Border corn around perimeter as needed. Customers are welcome to supply their own border, properly packaged.
All agronomic services.
Plot ID by staking side ranges.
Harvest and drying to <15%.
Plot destruction by chopping post harvest.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s)
GMO’s can be planted in Puerto Rico.
A completed GMO Declaration Form is required for all corn seed shipped to our Puerto Rico farm. This applies to non-GMO, non-regulated GMO and regulated GMO material.
Regulated GMO material requires IL Crop’s written pre-approval. Please submit a completed GMO Declaration Form along with handling, planting and shipping (to and from) protocols a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the anticipated shipping date.
If you anticipate sending Regulated GMO material to our farm, please remember to contact us early enough for pre-approval and farm location information so that you may apply to the USDA for your movement and planting permits. All permits must be current and specific for our farm location before shipping this material to Puerto Rico.

Extra Services
Hand planted delay/split rows are available.
Pollinating labor for labor & supervision is charged at hourly rates. The amount of labor necessary will vary depending on the type of pollinations needed and the complexity of the instructions. If IL Crop is working your nursery, a few more rows and simple instructions are beneficial and will save you money in the long run.
Pollinating supplies are in stock in Puerto Rico and available for your convenience. See page 10 for a price list on supplies. We usually have a good supply of shoot and tassel bags and row tag stock.
Row tags are the customer’s responsibility if you are coming to Puerto Rico to work your own nursery. If you desire, IL Crop can attach your row tags for an hourly charge if you send them ahead. If IL Crop is working your nursery, we will make up our own row tags (hourly charge plus materials) to reflect your instructions.
Harvest and packing supplies are available, but you are welcome to send your own. If you send your own harvest bags, be sure to send them in plenty of time for use, checking them for holes and cleanliness before shipping. Harvest of corn nurseries is usually scheduled for 30-35 days after the last pollination. Please mark your supplies using not only the company or organization, but also the person responsible for a particular nursery, as we have multiple programs for a given organization. Our IL Crop nursery code (customer abbreviation plus initials of person responsible) would be the best way to identify a specific program. Additional labor will be charged for attaching extra harvest tags to nursery stock after pollination. In most cases, one tag is sufficient to both work and harvest a corn nursery if a waterproof ink is used.
Fumigation is mandatory for all corn leaving Puerto Rico.
Shipping and handling charges will be assessed to all seed that we ship by air and sea. We carry a good supply of shipping boxes and containers. See shipping section for more information.

Corn Isolation for Field, Sweet, Pop & Specialty
 (top of page)
Corn isolations can be grown later into the season in Puerto Rico compared to most winter farm locations because of a “tropical speed up.” We can plant corn as late as early February, if need be, and return it to the Midwest for use that following spring. All isolations are planted to either a 660’ distance and/or a minimum 3 week time isolation based on maturity. All acreage is drip irrigated and planted on raised beds. Our standard planting ratio for crossing blocks is 4:2. One acre in our system is equal to 14,520’ of row. All corn isolations are provided with the following services:
Land, labor and management.
All agronomic services.
Planting; up to 3 male splits will be accommodated.
Roguing.
Harvest and drying; <12% for increase and crosses, <15% for ear corn.
Destruction of pollinator rows.
